After Action Review on the MALEFIAA Conference and Boyd Cycle Workshop

Spent the whole day Tuesday October 22nd presenting the Boyd Cycle Threat Assessment Workshop to 22 firearms instructors. The goal of the class was not only to present Boyd's theories and how they apply to law enforcement making force decisions and threat assessments on the street and in their investigations. But also how to utilize these ideas to improve training and overall outcomes in law enforcement performance. Cops have a tough job to do and the toughest is in making decisions under pressure while in rapidly changing conditions. Knowledge of Boyd’s theories and the know how in applying them can only make this difficult part of the job a bit easier.

The group were very involved and the feedback I received from those who participated in the workshop will only help evolve the program even further. Adding more scenarios as decision making exercises is one of the recommendations I believe will be very helpful in setting this program apart. The wealth of knowledge in the room was extraordinary. I look forward to presenting the evolved program even further next year. The upcoming Alaska trip will be even better to the involvement of this group.

They also had some other great trainers from around the country out to participate in training and numerous law enforcement vendors. Some of the programs included; Officer Down! Conflict and Survival, Basic Forcible Entry Skills for Patrol, Extreme close Quarters Survival Shooting, Point Shooting with handgun, Intro to the Combat Shotgun, Patrol Rifle Retention and Combatives, Concealed Carry, finding the lost basics and more great training programs to help evolve law enforcement training to prepare for the conventional and unconventional and evolving threats we face.  They also had a full Product Expo.

I had a great conversation with Mike Rayburn of WWW.combatgunfighting.com who takes a real progressive approach on firearms training and tactics. I picked up his book Combat Gunfighting which gets into how to prepare and shoot that matches the physiological response to survival stress and the real world. Be sure to check out his site.

I want to thank the MALEFIAA Boar and members for first taking the time to put this 4 day conference together and for having me participate. I look forward to next year.

Stay Oriented!
