First-Line Supervisors Do The Most Important Training

I was thumbing through my dog-eared and highlighted copy of Cigars Whiskey & Winning Leadership Lessons from General Ulysses S. Grant in which Lesson 31 states that; Grant recognized that his top priority was to prepare his regiment for battle.

“Company commanders will have their companies divided into convenient squads and appoint suitable persons to drill them. The officers of Companies are expected to be present and give their personal supervision to these drills, and see that all their men…are present.”

Lesson

The critical importance of the first-line supervisor in the training of his or her people cannot be overemphasized, training courses can teach needed knowledge and skills, but only the first-line supervisor’s on the job training can weld a group of individuals into a unit that functions effectively.

Are you developing your people? If not, identify why not? Can you be more effective in preparing those in your charge? What drive us to do the things that matter? INTEREST because it…drives insight, imagination, and initiative!
